When Sugar Had Me In A Chokehold

I couldn't stop at one cookieâI'd eat the entire bag of gummy bears and still want more, more, more! That temporary yum with the candy, then the crashâfeeling awful, exhausted, ashamed. "If only I could control myself" was pretty much a constant companion running in the background of my mind, and this is the last time Iâll binge I'd tell myself.
The message broadcasted is always "portion control" and "willpower." When you're dealing with sugar addiction and carb cravings that feel as if they're running your life, willpower is akin to bringing a water gun to a house fire.
Decades of dieting actually made the sugar addiction worse. Every restriction created more cravings. Every "cheat day" fed the monster. It's mind-blowing how people think they know about your body and project judgment and "you just need willpower" at you.
When you're constantly under-eating, your blood sugar can crash, and if that happens, your body screams for quick energy, and you might find yourself reaching for something to feed that carb monster.
Try this game-changer: When your body needs fuel, give it protein and fat. For example, eggs, nuts, and avocado. Carbs are short-term fuel that leaves you hungry again in an hour. Fat is slow-burning energy that actually keeps you satisfied.
The carb monster didn't disappear overnight, but it stopped running my life when I gave my body the tools to regulate itself instead of constantly putting it in crisis mode.
Flipping the switch on all the things we've been told, one mistruth at a time... what if it was never about willpower?
Here's to breaking free!
